Steam Quality Testing

Steam Quality Testing (SQT) comprises of three individual tests designed to test the performance of a steam generation system. These tests demonstrate the quality of steam and therefore it is suitability for its intended use.
  • Non Condensable Gases (NCGs)
  • Steam Dryness
  • Superheat
We perform GMP Steam Quality Testing to BS EN 285:2015, HTM 2010, HTM 2031, HTM 01 and Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) Technical Reports 1 and 48.

We have standard Tri-Clamp (Tri-Clover) connections and Fedegari connections available.

Steam Quality Testing Condenser
Non Condensable Gases
This test is designed to demonstrate that the levels of non-condensable gases present in the steam will not impede the sterilization conditions of the Sterilizer load. Non Condensable Gases can be the route cause for equilibration time failures.

The acceptance criteria for this test detailed in EN 285:2015 is a maximum of 3.5% non-condensable gases.

Steam Dryness

Excess moisture carried in the steam suspension can be the root cause for wet autoclave loads, too little moisture within the steam can lead to superheated steam during the expansion into the chamber.
The acceptance criteria for this test detailed in EN 285:2015 is dryness value of not less than 0,95.

Note: The dryness value in previous versions of EN285 was detailed as 0,95  for metal loads and 0,90 for all other types of loads.

Superheat

This test is used to demonstrate that the steam system is adequate to prevent steam from being superheated at the test point.

Superheated steam does not condense and therefore is less efficient than saturated steam. An autoclave fed with superheated steam performs like a dry heat sterilizer.

The acceptance criteria for this test detailed in EN 285:2015 is the superheat shall not exceed 25K.
